The meeting of the Accessibility Advisory Committee was held on Thursday, May 19, 2016 at the Magna Centre in Board Room #1, 800 Mulock Drive, Newmarket.

2.

Discussion regarding National Access Awareness Week

 

 

The Recreation Programmer – Family and Special Needs advised that the National Access Awareness Week event would be held on Saturday, June 4, 2016 at the Newmarket Farmer’s Market.  She further advised of the planned performances and presentations.  Discussion ensued regarding foul weather options.  In addition, Committee members requested a review of best practices related to set up of audio equipment at the Community Centre & Lions Hall in order to eliminate feedback through the microphone system.

3.

Discussion regarding a resident concern related to accessibility to College Manor Park.

 

 

The Council/Committee Coordinator provided a verbal report related to a concern regarding the staircase located within College Manor Park and a resident request related to removal of the staircase.  Discussion ensued regarding park access points, accessibility within the park and staff plans with respect to the staircase.  Richard Wilson to attend the park in order to provide a review of options related to the staircase for staff consideration which includes potential cost impacts and report back to the Committee at the June meeting.

 

4.

Discussion regarding a resident concern related to sidewalk accessibility along Stonehaven Avenue.

 

 

The Council/Committee Coordinator provided a verbal report related to a concern regarding the sidewalk along Stonehaven Avenue and advised that staff have met with the complainant and are working to resolve his concerns.  The Chair requested that he be provided with a list of issues identified by the complainant for review.

 

5.

Committee Workplan

 

 

The Council/Committee Coordinator provided an overview of the Committee Workplan.  Discussion ensued regarding certification of businesses for accessibility, provincial discussions related to a new accessibility logo and determination of a resource to continue StopGAP discussions. 

 

New Business

 

a)

The Chair advised that the Regional Accessibility Advisory Committee received a presentation at their last meeting with respect to regional sidewalks and revised standards for all regional sidewalks.  In addition, the Committee received a presentation regarding plans for the Yonge Davis corridor.   

 

b)

The Chair requested an update on the current Committee vacancy.  The Council/Committee Coordinator advised that the Appointment Committee has met to consider applications for a replacement member and provided a recommendation to Council for approval at the June 7, 2016 Council meeting.
